The Sound of Music

We are thrilled to announce that Carmarthen and District Youth Opera is bringing the timeless classic The Sound of Music to the Lyric Theatre next February 2026!

When a young novice named Maria proves too spirited for convent life in 1930s Austria, she is sent by the Mother Abbess to serve as a Governess to the seven children of a widowed Naval Officer, Captain Georg von Trapp. Her love of music and her charisma liven up the strict home, and the children come to adore her. Captain von Trapp feels differently at first, but soon Maria captures his heart too. Maria realises convent life may not be her path, and she and Georg fall in love and marry.

Following their honeymoon, they return home to find that their beloved Austria has been annexed with Germany and Captain von Trapp is ordered to serve immediately in their Navy. Refusing to concede, the family and their closest friends create a plan for them to escape to safety through the mountains and into Switzerland.

Get ready to be swept away by the unforgettable story of Maria and the von Trapp family, featuring much loved songs like Do-Re-Mi, My Favourite Things, Edelweiss and Climb Ev’ry Mountain. With stunning sets, powerful performances, and the incredible talent of the young cast, this is a show you won’t want to miss!
